Understanding Dental Insurance

Dental insurance plays a key role in maintaining your overall health and wellness. Unfortunately, navigating insurance plans can be confusing — and that confusion can sometimes keep patients from getting the care they need.
Our knowledgeable staff is here to walk you through the process, answer your questions, and make sure you fully understand your coverage before treatment begins.

At Higher Ground Dentistry, we understand that many patients face barriers when it comes to receiving quality dental care. That’s why we’re committed to removing those obstacles — starting with flexible office hours and broad insurance acceptance. We proudly work with all major providers, such as Delta DentalHumana & Cigna.

We also make understanding and using your dental insurance simple. Our experienced team is always available to explain your benefits, answer your questions, and help maximize your plan so you can pay as little out-of-pocket as possible for your care.

What Is Dental Insurance & How Does it Work?

Dental insurance can be confusing — but when used correctly, it’s a great tool for making dental care more affordable. Most patients receive their dental coverage through their employer, who often contributes toward the premium, lowering your monthly costs.

In simple terms, dental insurance involves paying a monthly fee to your provider in exchange for reduced or fully covered dental services. Most plans cover preventive care at 100%, including two annual cleanings, exams, and x-rays. Beyond that, basic procedures (like fillings) and major treatments (like crowns or root canals) are covered at varying percentages, with more complex care requiring higher out-of-pocket contributions.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

Many patients are unsure what “in-network” and “out-of-network” really mean. While “out-of-network” may sound like your insurance won’t work, that’s not always true — it depends on your plan type.

HMO Plans

HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plans require you to visit a dentist who is within your insurance network. Referrals to specialists must also come from your in-network dentist. If you have an HMO plan, it’s important to verify network participation before booking.

PPO Plans

PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans are far more flexible. Being “in-network” with a PPO provider means we’ve agreed to discounted rates, which means lower costs for you. But even if we’re “out-of-network,” your plan will often still cover a significant portion of treatment — and in many cases, your total cost remains quite reasonable
