Oral Health Diseases: Information about Oral Health Diseases

Oral Health Diseases: Information about Oral Health DiseasesOral health diseases attack teeth, gums, and the bone structure in the mouth. Oral diseases are caused by high sugar consumption, tobacco use, alcohol use, and poor hygiene. The following are examples of oral diseases.

Tooth decay/cavities

Tooth decay is mainly a result of the formation of plaque. Plaque is a thin layer of bacteria that forms on a tooth and converts sugars in food into bacteria that destroy teeth over time. Inadequate exposure to fluoride and not brushing teeth for a while leading to the development of caries, pain, infection, and even loss of teeth.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is characterized by painful, bleeding, swollen gums, and bad breath. In extreme cases, the gum might come away from the bone, leaving teeth and bone support. Teeth end up falling off because there is no support from the gums. The leading cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene and tobacco consumption.

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer includes lip, gum, and many more forms of cancer. Tobacco and alcohol use are among the leading causes of oral cancer. Oral cancer is more common in men and older people compared to women. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can lead to the development of oral cancer among young people.

Noma

This disease leads to the death of body tissue and lack of blood flow in the mouth and face, mostly in children under the age of six years. It mainly affects children in extreme poverty, suffering from malnutrition with weakened immunity.

Noma starts as a swelling gum into acute gingivitis, then progresses rapidly into destroying the soft tissue in the mouth. It, therefore, spreads and damages the face's hard tissue and skin tissues. Survivors suffer from facial disfigurement and difficulties in eating and speaking. When the Noma disease is detected early, the disease's progression can be rapidly halted.

Summary

There are several oral health diseases. They are caused by poor dental hygiene, foods, and products we consume. Frequent visits to a dentist help reduce the burdens that come with oral diseases.
