How Often Should You See a Dentist?

Posted on 7/24/2023 by Evan
How Often Should You See a Dentist?You may be tempted to postpone your next dental appointment but remember that it is important for your overall health. Failure to keep up with your appointments can only lead to tooth and gum diseases. Additionally, you only put yourself at risk for other diseases such as diabetes, stroke, and heart disease which can also be avoided by going to the dentist. Even if you maintain good oral health by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily, it is important that you keep up with your dental appointments.

During your dental checkup, your doctor will examine you for any dental problems and treat them immediately before they progress and become worse. The question however remains, how many times should you go to the dentist?

How Often Should I Go to The Dentist?

It is advisable to visit the dentist at least twice a year. However, there is no specific number of times that you should go to the dentist. How often you go for a checkup is different for each person, depending on your specific oral needs. It is important to keep up with the appointments as requested by your dentist.

Factors That Influence the Number of Checkups

As stated above, the number of times that you visit the dentist is different for each person. There are certain factors that will play a major role in the number of times that you visit the dentist. These include;

Oral Hygiene

Your oral hygiene will determine how many times you should visit the dentist. If you do not maintain good oral hygiene, then your dentist may suggest that you have more frequent visits. Therefore, it is important to ensure that you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily.

Lifestyle

People who tend to drink alcohol or smoke tobacco-based products may need to visit the dentist on a regular basis. Doctors and researchers have linked tobacco to many oral health problems. That being said, smoking will increase your risk of getting gum disease, tooth decay, and even tooth loss. On the other hand, alcohol will increase your chances of developing gingivitis and in other cases, it will worsen the symptoms for those who have it.

What Happens During a Dental Check-Up?

During your dental checkup, your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and mouth. The dentist will then ask about any dental problems that you might have experienced since your last visit. Thereafter, the dentist will offer advice about how best to take care of your teeth and offer any necessary treatment.

The number of times that you will visit your dentist depends on your oral hygiene practices and lifestyle. As stated before, failure to go to the dentist can only lead to further problems. Thus, it is important to keep up with your dental appointments as directed by your dentist.
