The Top Drinks And Foods That Stain Teeth

Close-up of white unstained teeth with a gap at Higher Ground DentistryMaintaining a bright and white smile requires more than just regular brushing and flossing. The foods and drinks you consume can affect the color of your teeth. Certain items are known for their staining potential and being mindful of your consumption can help prevent tooth discoloration. Continue reading to know the top drinks and foods that stain teeth:

Redwine

Red wine contains pigments called chromogens that can adhere to tooth enamel and cause staining over time. The acidity in wine can also weaken enamel, making it more susceptible to staining.

To minimize staining from red wine, consider drinking water alongside your wine to help wash away some of the pigments. Also, brushing your teeth before consuming wine can create a temporary protective barrier on your teeth. Using a straw to drink wine can also help reduce contact with your teeth if possible.

Coffee

Coffee is a common culprit when it comes to teeth staining. Its dark color and acidity contribute to enamel staining.

Similar to red wine, drinking water while consuming coffee can help rinse away some of the pigments. Using a straw or lighter coffee roast can also reduce the staining potential. Regular dental cleanings can help remove surface stains caused by coffee.

Sweets And Candy

Sugary sweets and candies can contribute to tooth staining indirectly by promoting the growth of bacteria that produce acid. This acid can wear out the enamel, making teeth more susceptible to staining from other foods and drinks. To prevent staining, limit your consumption of sugary treats and practice good oral hygiene to minimize the acid-producing bacteria in your mouth.

Tomato-based Sauces

Tomato-based sauces like pasta sauce and ketchup are highly pigmented and can lead to staining. The acidity in these sauces can also weaken enamel, making it easy to stain.

To prevent staining, consider enjoying these sauces in moderation and incorporating crunchy vegetables like celery, carrots, or broccoli that can help clean your teeth as you eat. To know more about foods and drinks that can stain your teeth, call our dentist.
