I Loathe Cow Milk. Are There Other Ways to Get Vitamin D and Calcium?

Dairy products represent a major source of both vitamin D and calcium. If you do not drink milk, how can you get your dose of vitamin D and calcium in? Here are some other foods and beverages that contain both vitamin D and calcium.


Why Are Vitamin D and Calcium So Important?


Both vitamin D and calcium are crucial for bone and tooth growth. In fact, your teeth cannot keep your tooth enamel and continue to build it without calcium and vitamin D. In fact, vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. If you do not get enough vitamin D and calcium, your teeth will lose enamel, which makes them more susceptible to breaking as well as cavities.


Where Can I Find Additional Sources of Vitamin D and Calcium?


If you cannot tolerate dairy, no worries. Several foods contain large amounts of both vitamin D and calcium. Here are some examples:

Different Forms of Milk and Cheese


First, if you still crave dairy but cannot tolerate cow milk, there are other varieties of milk that contain tons of vitamin D and calcium. Both almond milk and soy milk contain large amounts of both vitamin D and calcium. You can also find almond cheese, soy yogurt, and other dairy products that contain these essential vitamins.

Nuts and Seeds


In addition to dairy products, there are several varieties of nuts and seeds that contain vitamin D and calcium. Almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, sesame seeds, and tahini are all full of calcium with vitamin D. You can get a lot of these essential nutrients by making sure to add nuts and seeds to smoothies and salads.
