Why Do I Have to Floss Anyway?

Flossing is one way to care for your teeth and gums. In fact, dentists have been recommending that their patients floss twice a day for over 200 years. Dentists realized that when patients floss, they remove trapped food and plaque from between their teeth. These bits of plaque and trapped food allow bacteria to multiply, which can cause periodontal disease and cavities. If you care for your teeth and gums by flossing, you reduce the chances you will have gum disease as well as dental caries.

How to Up Your Flossing Game

If you are ready to care for your teeth and gums by flossing, your first step is to decide what kind of floss you want to use. You can use traditional floss, which comes in waxed and unwaxed types. If you loathe flossing with traditional string floss, you may want to try flossers. Flossers have a plastic handle with a piece of floss strung across the top of the handle. Once you have finished flossing, you simply toss the flosser away.

Another option is water flossers. Water flossers look much like an electric toothbrush, but instead of a brush at the top of the appliance, there is a piece that shoots a jet of water when you aim it at your gums. Many people love water flossers because they are effective at dislodging food particles and plaque. Also, water flossers are excellent for people who have bridges, braces, or dental implants because they are able to clean your teeth more effectively than traditional flossers. Keep in mind that water flossers are more expensive than traditional string floss or flossers.
