Why Is Preventing Cavities So Important?

It can become repetitive after a while, but there is a reason we harp on tooth brushing so heavily. Tooth decay is the number one noncontagious disease in the world. In fact, cavities are so pervasive they affect 90 percent of the population. Here are some of the best reasons we know to take care of your teeth and prevent cavities.

Cavities: A History

For much of human history, adults lost all of their teeth before they were 30. In fact, you may remember your grandparents or great-grandparents wearing dentures. Dentures have been around for centuries so that adults could cope with tooth loss. Many adults never brushed their teeth at all, or it was haphazard.

However, at the turn of the 20th century, fluoride was discovered to be a great tooth saver. In fact, the changes to dental health were so profound many cities incorporated fluoride into their drinking water systems, and toothpaste began to have fluoride as well. Although fluoride has been an amazing discovery, you still need to do your part by brushing and flossing.

Are There Other Issues Besides Tooth Loss?

Cavities can cause all kinds of issues in your mouth besides a hole in your tooth. All cavities are caused by bacteria. If you have a cavity in your tooth and you do not get it filled, it can cause you enormous pain as it grows. Also, because a cavity is a tooth infection, you are running the risk of having that infection spread to your gums, other teeth, and your jawbone.

Many research studies done by the American Dental Association have found that poor dental health can cause issues in other areas of your body. Poor dental health can lead to difficulty controlling your blood sugar, which is crucial if you have diabetes. Also, inflammation in your mouth can be tied to inflammation in your heart as well as your brain and nervous system. The better you take care of your mouth and fight tooth decay, the healthier you are overall.
